Sanjuanita Alba

sanjuanita albaSanjuanita is a first generation Latina, and grew up in Houston’s East End area. She is a graduate of Furr High School, where she excelled and graduated top of her class. She later went on to college with a full ride scholarship to the University of Texas at Austin and graduated with a Bachelor’s of Science in Communications. She also studied abroad for a semester at Universidade de Salvador da Bahia in Brazil. Sanjuanita is the first in her family to graduate college, and went on to attend St. Thomas University’s Liberal Arts Masters Program.

Her volunteer participation is widely spread, as she was Education Director for Austin’s East End Community Center, and translated documents for immigrants pleading asylum for the Political Asylum Project of Austin. Later, she volunteered as a Confirmation Catechist at St. Phillip of Jesus Christ Catholic Church in Houston and assisted NALEO with various citizenship drives and get out the vote initiatives. She joined the Harris County Tejano Democrats in 2007, and has gained immense interests in local politics, and was recently elected Treasurer for the State Tejano Democrats.

After graduation from college, Sanjuanita worked for Congressman Gene Green for 2 years, as a staff assistant. She is now a state certified early education, bilingual teacher at a local Houston Independent School District school in Houston’s Northside. Her hobbies include campaign volunteering and reading about history especially the Spanish Conquest and Latin American Literature.

Sanjuanita attends St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, and is soon to be married to our Vice Chair, Jason Cisneroz. She resides in the Near Northside, and is a member of the North Central Civic Association.
